Contador Survives Bad Crash In Volta Catalunya

Spanish riding great Alberto Contador has luckily survived a bad crash at the 6th stage of Volta Catalunya.

However, he was able to avoid time loss as Richie Porte from Sky retained overall lead.

The Tinkoff star fell on flat run-in at the finishing line of Port Aventura & crossed the last line 2 minutes 39 seconds down on the rivals in general classification.
But since the accident occurred inside the last three kilometer, race rules gave hi, same timing as was given to other riders of peloton. It implies that Contador is the 3rd overall, 7 seconds behind Porte.

Porte however, did not face any such issue during the race & crossed the finishing line safely with his bunch. Same with Domenico Pozzovivo from Ag2r-La Mondiale and the Italian was 5 seconds adrift of the Aussie winner. Domenico came up with the 2nd place in the race.

The 6th stage had Katusha rider Sergei Chernetski as the winner. The winning man was a part of 21-rider breakaway & then beat Etixx – Quick-Step rider Julian Alaphillipe who came to the 2nd place. The 3rd place was taken by CCC Sprandi star Maciej Paterski who ended with a spectacular sprint finish.

Chris Froome from Team Sky endured quite a critical day in saddle as he has long been fighting given his continuous injuries that started with 2014 Tour France. The 2013 Tour de France champion finished at a low 94th position in the race.

Elsewhere, Ben Swift from the same team retained his forty-one second lead overall at Settimana Internazionale Coppi e Bartali championship in Italy. The 3rd stage was won by star sprinter Francesco Chicchi.

However, Contador would be into tough times ahead as he would gave to face both Giro Italia & Tour de France without the guidance of his most trusted mentor Bjarne Riis.
