Alarming Statistics On Cycle Accidents Uncovered By Newcastle

A study by the University of Newcastle has recently revealed in a study that over a week’s time, over three cyclists are admitted after bike accidents to the John Hunter Hospital. Ben Ewald, an epidemiologist, during the process of his research interacted with more than one third of the total 180 cyclists who were injured and admitted to the hospital, over a period of 12 months. His main focus was on Lake Macquarie and Newcastle area.

Doctor Ewald revealed that while most of the accidents happened off the road, nevertheless there is a lot of concern especially in cases where a car was involved.
Talking about the accidents cases he commented that out of all cases, thirteen of them involved some sort of an issue between a vehicle and a bike. He further added that these problems can be certainly improved if some cycle ways are specially built on the roads.

Stating an example of the accidents, Dr. Ewald said that there was one instance in Hunter Street, where a cyclist was riding along Hunter Street, while suddenly a delivery van took off, which was parked by the street. All of a sudden it took a U turn, and knocked off the cyclist and drove all over him. Dr. Ewald added, saying that his research will reveal that Hunter roads require safety measurements, in order to make it better both for bike riders and other vehicle.

His study has revealed that some roads are pretty unsafe for the cyclists, especially the intersection and the roundabouts, which are quite dangerous. Two of the accidents happened at a roundabout and at right turns.
He recommended a set of changes, which if inculcated in road safety rules, can cut down the number of accidents by quite a lot.

Mayor Pledges Active Participation

Boris Johnson is hell bent on actively pursuing “Cycling Revolution” in London with the assurance of making the city welcoming to bikers akin to Copenhagen and Amsterdam. The city Mayor has pledged to make as many as 33 of London’s endangering routes safer for the riders.

Mr. Johnson was at City Hall recently where he showed updated figures regarding a high profile police traffic project that was launched following 6 cyclist deaths within less than couple of weeks. As per the sources, the new police traffic project has stopped over 2,000 motorists & cyclists in the last 15 days for infractions like jumping red signals.

Speaking at the conference regarding depletion of abnormal figure of biker deaths related to lorry clashes, the London Mayor stressed on a new program by London Transport which is geared to make thirty-three of the capital’s most dangerous routes safer for the bikers.

“There’s now a rising scream asserting that the biking revolution is getting too fast & that we must somehow get every cyclist off road & people are taking me in some accusing way. The analysis has hugely exaggerated my messianic capacities. I’m a very passionate cyclist myself but I’m not some Pied Pedaller”, noted the London Mayor. “People take to bikes since they love biking.”

Johnson has admitted the imperfection of the current London road & traffic system, further acknowledging the need for a safer system. He has promised to revamp the current system with the help of segregated lines.

“We would be expanding & improving superhighways, where possible & where it deems sensible. We would segregate these routes just the way we’ve done in case of Stratford. The London cycling revolution is meant to continue & accelerate. It isn’t the right time to give up or slacken off – if we can get it all right, the reward is going to be huge. Our city should be the ideal one for the riders.”

USA Cycling Lets Go Of USA Cup

After a long debate, USA Cup has finally got the decision of not making their events a part of the USA Cycling. USA Cup always is in charge of most national and regional level cycling races. Earlier, USA Cup had conducted the Pro UET and the Pro XCT under the USA Cycling Association. These fall under the endurance calendar and cross country (national level) categories, respectively.

Steve Johnson, the President and CEO of USA Cycling, recently told the press that they are surely disappointed to lose out on certain events but at the same time, they will concentrate on their own events, Pro UET and the Pro XCT, more aggressively now.

They all have other stakeholders to consider now, quoted Johnson. USA Cycling officials had a meeting with their mountain bike committee as well. They announced that their calendar would feature some new changes. They will not only represent the venues for the upcoming races but it will also be portrayed in such a way that will inspire upcoming and new riders. All this drama started with the petition to change the highly debated UCI Rule number 1.2.019. After a long struggle and questioning, it will finally be presented in an edited and revised form from 1st January 2014. This rule will not allow any professional cyclist to take part in any competitive, registered races, which are not under the UCI or USAC.

The main reason why USA Cup pulled out of USA Cycling is because they have been in collaboration with USAC for two sessions now and there had been a lot of problems with the costs and payments. When the USA Cycling officials
